Position Title: Youth Services Librarian (Non-Exempt)
Salary:  $40,000 - $45,000 D.O.Q.

General Summary
Under general supervision by the Library Services Director, provides assistance in support of teen and children’s collection development, programming, and delivery of services.

Supervision
General supervision is provided by the Assistant Library Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Youth Services Librarian Essential Duties

  • Plans, develops, and implements age-appropriate programs and services
  • Prepares crafts for Story Time and take and make programs
  • Plans and develops any special event programs, such as summer reading
  • Responsible for collection management of children’s collection, including evaluating donated items, materials and resources selection, ordering, processing, cataloging, and weeding in accordance with library’s mission and prevailing practices
  • Provides reader’s advisory and information services for children, caregivers, and teens
  • Conducts and coordinates outreach services in the community, such as schools and community groups regarding library and youth services
  • Prepares monthly statistics to be included in the library board report
  • Assists in pursuing grants
  • Helps keep accurate counts of library program attendance
  • Prepares appealing promotional materials including, but not limited to slides, presentations, brochures, fliers, calendars, charts and graphs, articles, videos, and social media content
  • Supports the library’s fundraising efforts
  • Updates, diversifies, and creates brochures for reading lists

Other Important Duties

  • Assists and backs up other areas as needed and/or assigned
  • May travel to attend meetings, conferences, and training
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Education and Experience
    1. Bachelor’s Degree from a college or university is required. Desired areas of study are Library Science, Early Childhood, Education or English. Coursework in youth service, library service, children’s or young adult literature preferred.
    2. Knowledge and experience using an automated library system and databases preferred.
    3. Knowledge and experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher preferred.
    4. Cash Handling experience.
    5. Previous Customer Service experience.

  1. Any combination of education and experience would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job.
  2. Ability to speak Spanish is desired but not required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of: 

  • Policies and procedures of department;
  • Basic principles of business letter writing and basic report preparation
  • Principles and practices of mail collection and distribution
  • Basic mathematical principles
  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Principles and procedures of filing
  • Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment
  • Typing and/or word processing techniques
  • Current trends in library services for and with children

Skills in: 

  • General office procedures and in the operation of standard office equipment, including but not limited to phone system, fax machine, copy machine, computer keyboard, and Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook);
  • Excellent customer service

  • Self-motivation
  • Observation to read, sort and shelve library materials and maintain catalog records
  • Cash Handling
