Fire Inspector
Salary $88,000 Annually
Under direction of the fire chief or his designee the Fire Inspector shall take part in prevention, enforcement and public education activities as assigned by the Operations and Prevention Divisions. Perform annual fire inspections of City of Melissa business. Perform residential inspections required for foster homes. Perform fire investigations in the City of Melissa. Assist Collin County Fire Marshal office with fire investigation in ETJ and county response area. Perform other duties as assigned. May serve in a leadership capacity at the direction of the Fire Chief.

Examples of Duties:
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
- Performs assigned services and activities within the Fire Department including all, fire prevention, code enforcement, fire inspections, plan review, fire suppression, and related functions and activities.
- Conducts fire inspections and applies codes and ordinances.
- Reviews construction documents submitted to the city for construction of commercial Occupancies.
- Performs safety inspections for new and remodel commercial construction projects; Inspects buildings and locations for compliance with applicable fire codes and standards.
- Attends development and design meetings representing the Fire department; Coordinates with City staff regarding plan review for development and site plans.
- Reviews building and life-safety system plans for compliance. Discusses results with business owners, managers, architects, and developers; recommends corrections and issues warning notices as necessary.
- Abides by fire department goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and priorities for assigned programs; recommend and administer policies and procedures.
- Ensures that equipment, safety clothing, apparatus, and supplies are specified, purchased received, inspected, and distributed in an effective manner and consistent with City policy.
- Works with the City’s Emergency Management Plan to perform incident response and mitigation under direction of the supervisory personnel.
- Files criminal cases with appropriate prosecution and testifies in legal proceedings.
- Responds to requests and inquiries from the public, other department personnel, and other City Departments.
- Prepares reports on fire incident responses, arson investigations, inspection and permit activities, and other activities carried out in the division
- Develop and maintain lines of communication and cooperation within the fire department with supervisors and peers.
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents; utilize the incident command system to direct activities and communications in fire and/or emergency situations; take action to mitigate hazards and treat patients; make decisions affecting life and property under emergency circumstances; follow tactics and strategies as determined by the immediate supervisor.
- Attend and participate in professional group meetings; maintain awareness of new trends and developments in the field of fire science and emergency medical services; incorporate new developments as appropriate.
- Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints.
- Ensures all equipment and apparatus are properly inspected and maintained on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual schedule per Melissa Fire Department Standard Operating Procedures and other regulatory agencies which may govern firefighting, emergency medical, or special operating response.
- Works 40 hours per week.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED
- License or Certificate
- Minimum of Texas Commission on Fire Protection - Intermediate Firefighter (Advanced preferred).
- Texas Commission on Fire Protection - Fire Inspector;
- Texas Commission on Fire Protection - Fire Investigator;
- Texas Commission on Fire Protection - Incident Safety Officer
- Texas Commission on Fire Protection - Fire Officer I
- Texas Commission on Fire Protection - Fire Instructor I
- Texas Commission on Fire Protection - Plans Examiner
- TCOLE basic peace officer license (preferred)
- Minimum of NIMS 100, 200, 700, 701, 702, 703, 704, and 800 proof of training.
- Class B Exempt Driver’s License.
- Must be able to successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening and background investigation.

- Maintain compliance with all state and national regulatory organizations in order to perform the functions of this job and any other duties which are assigned.

Environment:
Work is performed in an ever changing environment with frequent travel to various locations to attend meetings and/or perform department activities in responding to emergency scenes, disasters, or critical incidents; the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts; regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and wet and/or humid conditions; regularly works in high precarious places; regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration; the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, the noise level is occasionally very loud due to sirens etc.; wear protective apparel including but not limited to; bunker coat, bunker pants, fire boots, fire helmet, fire hood, goggles, face protector, aprons, safety shoes, and self-contained breathing apparatus; incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evening and weekends and may be required to travel outside City boundaries to attend meetings; subject to mandatory call back at any time.
Physical:
